All One in Christ

Before concluding the look at what the Bible says about same-sex relationships, there is one more passage to read. It is short, and is not usually associated with same-sex relationships, but I believe it is very important. It has a simple message, and it gives great insight. The passage is in Galatians.

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26-28, NIV)

This passage is all in the present tense: "for you are all one". Galatians is not a promise of the unity that will exist after the return of Christ. It is about how we are today.

In Christ, we are all part of one group, all in one category. The differences between us, the differences that the world looks at, do not matter. They are irrelevant, because we are all one.

Galatians and Relationships

Imagine a Christadelphian ecclesia that would not fellowship someone because he was in a relationship with someone of the "wrong" race. It is an appalling thought. From Galatians we know that race is not important to those in Christ. No Christadelphian ecclesia would react to a relationship because of the race or races involved.

Imagine a Christadelphian ecclesia that would not fellowship someone because he was in a relationship with someone of the "wrong" social class. It is an appalling thought. From Galatians we know that social class is not important to those in Christ. No Christadelphian ecclesia would react to a relationship because of the social class or classes involved.

Now imagine a Christadelphian ecclesia that would not fellowship someone because he was in a relationship with someone of the "wrong" gender. That should be an equally appalling thought. From Galatians we know that gender is not important to those in Christ. No Christadelphian ecclesia should react to a relationship because of the gender or genders involved. Sadly it is all too common that, while race and social class are ignored by Christadelphians, gender is something that influences our decisions.

These three things go hand in hand. Irrelevance of race, irrelevance of social class, irrelevance of gender. Mixed-race relationships should be treated the same way as single-race relationships. Mixed-class relationships should be treated the same way as single-class relationships. Mixed-sex relationships should be treated in the same way as single-sex relationships. If we judge relationships based on the gender or genders involved we ignore Galatians as surely as if we judge relationships based on the race or races involved. Galatians teaches us that we must accept same-sex relationships.
